How wide is it inside?

Lay the ring flat and put a ruler across it, through the centre.
Count the millimetres from inside edge to inside edge, where the opening is widest. Not the metal.
Look straight down to read it. Half millimetres count.

Inner diameter

On a ruler, half a millimetre is about a size and a half, so read it twice. A calliper gives tenths: type them.

A narrow paper strip around a finger, a pencil marking where its end overlaps.

How long is the strip?

Cut a strip of paper 5 mm wide, narrower than a pencil.
Wrap it once around the base of the finger you will wear it on. Snug: it turns, with a little resistance.
Mark with a pencil where the end overlaps.
Slide it off over the knuckle. If it will not pass, mark again a little looser.
Open it flat on a ruler: one end on the zero, read the millimetres at your mark.

Measure with warm hands, later in the day: cold fingers read small. No paper? Dental floss works, it does not stretch. Not string or wool: they stretch.

The paper sits on the skin and reads half a millimetre long. Type what you read: we take the 0.5 mm off.
